The four poster works are part of the “Casa delle Donne” (Women’s Shelters) series, created between 1998 and 2004. The series was first realized in 1998 as part of a commission for a women’s shelter in Zagreb. This was a project by curators Nada Beros and Tihomir Milovac, who were working at the time as conservators at the Muzej suvremene umjetnosti (Museum of Contemporary Art) in Zagreb, Croatia. The artist used advertising images for luxury sunglasses from glossy fashion magazines and supplemented them with short quotes from women who had been victims of domestic violence. The posters were presented in exhibitions, published in newspapers as artistic, critical media interventions, or displayed on billboards to raise public awareness of this issue—which, unfortunately, remains highly relevant today—and to gain broader support. In the years that followed, the project continued in collaboration with women’s shelters in other cities—including Luxembourg, Bangkok, Pristina, Utrecht, and Genoa—as well as with the UDI Transitional Shelter Against Violence and the Autonomous Women’s Shelter in Zagreb.
