An idea first conceived in Stéphane Mallarmé’s Un coup de dés (A roll of the dice), 1897 has become an integral part of avant-garde methods of the 20th century: unmasking language as a convention that serves to subject the individual to discipline and a regulated system of capitalist exploitability. Against this situation, language is to undergo a revision in order to reconquer its imaginative space, to break free of its purposive character. In this comprehensive publication, published to the exhibition of the same name, renowned art historians and artists reflect on the poetic and subversive potential of language.
