The most important raw material of the new industrial sector, talk-shows and game-shows, are common people. They are cheap and want to make an appearance, but are they worth looking at? Common people respond to a call that goes out via on-screen text, and after pre-selection they are received by producers and supervisors. The supervisors, of student age, explain the rules of the game and practice getting on and off stage; they inquire into life stories and rehearse them. If the cinema manufactures dreams, this kind of TV manufactures daydreams. (Harun Farocki)
