Artwork text

The experimental exploration of the perception of space and time is a central theme of artist Martin Walde’s multifaceted multimedia work. The installation Raumbeule / Transportable Hole creates two opposing spatial illusions with one white and one pitch-black circular area: The convex white area gives the impression of the wall bulging toward the observer. The black of the second circular area suggests a deep opening in the wall. This “transportable hole” is an allusion to the cartoon Who Framed Roger Rabbit? In the film, the “transportable hole” in the form of a black circle becomes a tool of escape, whereby the circle can be placed as required to open a space at any location, breaking all physical laws. Through this spatial illusion, Walde entangles the fictional world of art with the space that is subject to the laws of physics. (Jürgen Tabor)
