Ernst Mitzka
Ernst Mitzka was born in Marburg, Germany in 1945. He works in the media of video and photography; his interests are in the visual depiction of the political, psychological, and ideological. As starting material, the artist uses found materials, for example, psychology handbooks, or current press photos from daily newspapers. In recent years, he developed numerous site-specific works and projects in public space, such as Vom Fluß in den Strom – Pegel halten! (1989) on the Alster in Hamburg. In 1989/1990 Mitzka had an important exhibition at the de Appel Arts Centre in Amsterdam, in addition, he has been represented in group exhibitions, such as Covering the Real – Arts and the Press Picture at the Kunstmuseum Basel (2005), RECORD > AGAIN! – 40 Years of Video Art– Part 2 at ZKM, Karlsruhe (2009) and Kunsthaus Dessau (2010), as well as Gesture Sign Art at the Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien, Berlin (2012). Ernst Mitzka lives and works in Hamburg.
