Artwork text

The work is based on the drawing Dog Derby (c. 1970) of dogs pulling a vehicle which is a cross between a cart and a boat—a wheeled, land vehicle with oars. Gironcoli made frequent use of this motif in the seventies. At the time he produced a series of silkscreen prints, which – like this one – reflect the formal canon of his sculptures and in which he experimented with silkscreen techniques. For his support, he chose an opaque piece of film, which looks transparent through the application of clear varnish.
